The Internal Revenue Service Is Now One Hundred Years Old

I won’t say “Happy Birthday” or “Happy Centennial,” because the IRS may be the most hated organization of all time.  Maybe even more hated than the Nazis or the Ku Klux Klan.  On October 3, 1913, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Sixteenth Amendment into law, legalizing income taxes, and on the very next day the IRS started collecting them.

Click here to see in my history papers what I wrote about the IRS, in 1913 and in our own time.  When there are so many pages of tax code that two accountants working on the same tax return are guaranteed to get different results, you know it’s time to throw out the bureaucracy and start over.  Fair Tax, anyone?
